Oakland Public Works Tool Rental Service for Volunteer Events

Oakland Public Works offers a free Tool Rental Service to support volunteer cleanup and greening projects on City of Oakland land. This service provides essential tools for volunteers to enhance their community and contribute to a cleaner, greener Oakland. This guide outlines the guidelines and procedures for borrowing tools.

Tool Rental Guidelines

To ensure a smooth and efficient tool rental process, please adhere to the following guidelines:

Requesting Tools

  • Submit your request: Use the online form to provide details about your event, including who, what, where, when, and why you need the tools.
  • Plan ahead: Request tools at least one week before your preferred pickup date. For large city-wide events like MLK Day, Earth Day, and Creek to Bay Day, submit requests one month in advance. Shorter lead times may not be accommodated.

Picking Up Tools

  • Locations: Tools can be picked up at two locations: the loading dock at 250 Frank H. Ogawa Plaza or 5050 Coliseum Way.
  • Hours: Pickup is available Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Documentation: Upon pickup, you’ll receive a Tool Return Slip to be filled out upon returning the equipment.

Returning Tools

  • Timeframe: Return tools within five days of your event.
  • Locations & Hours: Drop off tools at the same pickup location, Monday through Friday, between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
  • Cleaning: Clean all tools thoroughly before returning them.
  • Notification: After returning the tools, submit the online Tool Return Form to confirm the drop-off.

Reporting Your Event

  • Post-Event Reporting: After your volunteer event, report your activity using the online reporting form. This step is crucial for tracking the impact of volunteer efforts.

Important Considerations

  • Eligibility: This tool rental service is exclusively for volunteer events on City of Oakland land. Non-volunteer events are not eligible.
  • Compliance: Failure to report event details or return tools on time will disqualify you from future tool borrowing.
  • Long-Term Rentals: Groups conducting monthly or more frequent cleanups can request long-term tool rentals.

Long-Term Tool Rental Options

For groups committed to ongoing cleanup efforts, long-term tool rentals offer a convenient solution. Contact Oakland Public Works to discuss your needs and request a long-term rental agreement. This option ensures consistent access to the necessary tools for sustained community improvement.
