For United States Marines reporting to the School of Infantry East (SOI-East), understanding the check-in procedures is crucial for a smooth transition. This guide provides essential information for Marines heading to Camp Geiger, NC, ensuring a seamless reporting process while adhering to Marine Corps regulations, particularly regarding the wear of Usmc Service Alphas.
Essential Check-in Information for SOI-East
Whether you are assigned to Marine Combat Training (MCT) or Infantry Training Battalion (ITB), your initial reporting location is the Visitors Center. This is the first building on the right upon entering the base. It is imperative to stay in the far-right lane when entering the base and not proceed to the front gate. Upon arrival at the Visitors Center, a Combat Instructor or SOI-East representative will transport you to your designated check-in point via van or bus. SOI-East is located at Camp Geiger, within Marine Corps Air Station New River (MCAS NR) in Jacksonville, NC.
Uniform Requirements: Service Alphas and More
Marines are required to report in Service Alphas. This is the prescribed uniform for reporting to SOI-East and reflects the professionalism and standards of the Marine Corps. Ensure you are wearing your Service Alphas upon arrival. If you were not issued a Service Alpha coat, the senior service uniform is acceptable for reporting.
In addition to wearing Service Alphas, you must have the following items on your person or in your carry-on luggage:
- One set of Woodland Marine Corps Combat Utility Uniforms (MCCUU).
- Your Service Record Book (SRB).
- Military ID.
Crucially, bring a set of Woodland cammies with you as carry-on luggage. Luggage can be delayed or lost during travel, and reporting without the correct uniform will lead to being dropped to the Marines Awaiting Training (MAT) platoon, causing delays in your training schedule. Changing clothes in parking lots is strictly prohibited.
Eyeglasses and Haircut Standards
If you were issued eyeglasses during boot camp, bring them with you, even if they are damaged. Civilian eyeglasses are not authorized for field training or live-fire ranges. Having your issued military glasses, even broken ones, prevents delays in your training while waiting for replacements. Furthermore, ensure you have a fresh haircut conforming to Marine Corps standards. Extravagant haircuts with designs or eyebrow slits are not permitted.
MCT and ITB Specific Check-in Procedures
While the initial reporting location is the Visitors Center for both MCT and ITB, the subsequent check-in buildings differ:
Marine Combat Training (MCT) Check-in
For Marines assigned to Marine Combat Training, proceed to Building G540 for check-in. Aim to check in by 1200 on your scheduled reporting day to avoid the risk of being dropped from training.
- MCT Officer of the Day (OOD): 910-376-5668
- Administrative Student Center (ASC): 910-449-2244
Infantry Training Battalion (ITB) Check-in
Infantry Training Battalion students will check in at Building G702 with the ITB RSO&I Staff.
- ITB Officer of the Day (OOD): 910-238-9833
- Administrative Student Center (ASC): 910-449-2244
If you encounter difficulties locating the check-in facilities, contact your respective Officer of the Day (OOD). As a default measure, you can also contact your Recruiting Station for guidance.
Reporting via Bus or Taxi
If arriving by bus, the Jacksonville, NC bus station is located approximately four miles from Camp Geiger. Taxi fare from the bus station to Camp Geiger typically ranges from $20 to $30. When traveling by bus or taxi, ensure you are in your Service Alpha uniform before departing the bus station or airport. Consider coordinating with fellow Marines to share taxi fares. Retain your receipt, as you may be eligible for reimbursement later.
Reporting via Air Travel
Albert J. Ellis Airport (OAJ) in Jacksonville, NC, is the closest airport to Camp Geiger, situated about 16 miles away. Taxi fare from the airport to Camp Geiger is generally between $35 and $40. Similar to bus travel, team up with other Marines to split taxi costs. Change into your Service Alpha uniform before arriving at SOI-East after departing the airport. Remember to save your taxi receipt for potential reimbursement.
Additional Reporting Instructions and Important Considerations
Check in no later than the date specified on your orders. If you anticipate any delays, immediately contact the appropriate OOD. MCT Marines are strongly advised to check in between 0700 and 1200 on their report date to minimize the risk of being assigned to the MAT Platoon, which can impact subsequent MOS school assignments. Upon reaching Jacksonville, NC, proceed directly to SOI-East for check-in. Unscheduled hotel stays are not authorized. Billeting will be provided with your training battalion upon arrival.
Handling Reporting Delays
In the event of travel disruptions such as missed flights or buses, accidents, or cancellations, immediately report the situation to the MCT/ITB OOD. If you cannot reach your training battalion, contact the ASC and the SOI-E OOD.
- ASC: 910-449-2244 (Normal working hours: 0730-1630)
- SOI-E OOD Office: 910-449-0179
- SOI-E OOD Cell: 910-376-5485
Report to SOI-East immediately upon arrival in Jacksonville or the surrounding area, regardless of the time. Both ITB and MCT are equipped to receive reporting Marines during and after normal working hours (0730 to 1600).
