Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences: Shaping Military Nursing Leaders

The Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing (GSN) at the Uniformed Services University Of The Health Sciences (USU) stands as a pivotal institution, dedicated to cultivating exceptional advanced practice nurses, nurse scientists, and scholars. For over 25 years, GSN has been instrumental in equipping the nation with highly skilled nursing professionals uniquely tailored for leadership roles within military and federal healthcare systems.

Established in 1993, the school emerged from a critical national need to address the shortage of independent nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, and other advanced practice registered nurses. Dr. James Zimble, then President of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, recognized this urgent demand. Driven by a commitment to ensure the highest quality patient care within federal services, he championed the establishment of a Graduate School of Nursing alongside the esteemed military medical school. Remarkably, within four months of this proposal, the inaugural cohort of Family Nurse Practitioner students commenced their studies, marking the beginning of GSN’s sustained growth and impact.

Today, the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing offers a comprehensive suite of programs, including a Master of Nursing Science (specifically for Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist), a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with specializations in Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist, Family Nurse Practitioner, Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Nursing Science. GSN actively fosters a vibrant environment where students and faculty engage in collaborative research and scholarly pursuits, tackling the most pressing healthcare challenges confronting military and federal health systems.

Graduates from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Graduate School of Nursing are distinguished by their readiness to not only meet the immediate demands of healthcare agencies but also to deliver outstanding, patient-centered care in the most demanding settings. Whether serving at home or deployed across the globe, GSN alumni are prepared to lead and excel in diverse healthcare environments.
