Stay Alert: TxTag Customers Targeted by Smishing Scams – How to Protect Yourself

Texans using TxTag are being warned about an increase in text message scams designed to steal personal information and money. These fraudulent messages, known as smishing (SMS phishing), falsely claim to be from TxTag and typically state that customers owe a toll balance. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is actively working to shut down these scam websites and alert customers.

Understanding the TxTag Texting Scam

Since April, TxDOT has seen a rise in reports from TxTag customers who have received suspicious text messages. These messages often create a sense of urgency, telling recipients they have an outstanding balance or a past due amount. Scammers aim to trick customers into clicking malicious links that can lead to fake websites designed to steal login credentials, payment information, or even install malware on their devices.

It’s crucial to understand that while TxTag does communicate with customers via email, text, and phone calls, TxTag will NOT send unsolicited text messages demanding final payments or notifying customers of past due balances. Official TxTag text communications will only originate from the shortcode 22498. Any message coming from a different number should be treated as suspicious.

How to Verify and Protect Your TxTag Account from Scams

TxDOT emphasizes that TxTag prioritizes customer account security. Here’s how you can verify communications and protect yourself:

  • Direct Contact is Key: If you receive a text, email, or call that seems suspicious, do not click any links or provide any personal information. Instead, directly contact Txtag Customer Service through official channels.

  • Official TxTag Contact Information:

    • Website: TxTag.org – This is the safest way to access your account and find legitimate contact options.
    • Phone: 1-888-468-9824 – Call this number to speak directly with TxTag customer service representatives.
  • Account Verification: TxTag customer service will always verify your identity before discussing account details. They will ask you to confirm your account information to ensure they are speaking with the correct account holder.

  • Opt-in Notifications: TxTag sends notifications via email and text only to customers who have explicitly opted in to these services through their account settings. If you are unsure about your notification preferences, log in to your TxTag online account or contact TxTag customer service to confirm your settings.

Reporting TxTag Smishing Scams

If you believe you have received a fraudulent text message, email, or phone call related to TxTag, it’s important to report it.

  • Contact TxTag Customer Service: Reach out to TxTag directly via their website or phone number (1-888-468-9824) to report the suspicious communication. This helps them track and address the ongoing scams.
  • File a Complaint with the FBI: You can also report the scam to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov. The FBI is actively tracking these types of scams and provides further information on their website (FBI PSA on Smishing Scams).

By staying informed and vigilant, TxTag customers can protect themselves from these smishing scams. Always rely on official TxTag customer service channels for any account-related concerns and never click on suspicious links in unsolicited messages. Your proactive approach is the best defense against these fraudulent activities.
