Moorhead Public Service (MPS) prioritizes the health and safety of its community by actively complying with the Safe Drinking Water Act. In line with the Lead and Copper Rule Revision, MPS has submitted its comprehensive service line materials inventory to the Minnesota Department of Health. It’s important to understand that Moorhead’s source water and treated water leaving the MPS Water Treatment Plant are lead-free. Lead contamination in drinking water typically originates from lead service lines connecting homes to the water main, or from internal plumbing within the home.
Accessing Your Service Line Information
MPS has made the service line inventory readily accessible to the public. Residents can determine the material composition of their service line through the Lead Inventory Tracking Tool (LITT) available here. To compile this inventory, MPS meticulously reviewed historical water distribution system maintenance records to identify potential lead service lines (LSLs). Furthermore, door-to-door verifications and a customer survey (accessible here) contributed to the data collection process.
Current Status and Next Steps
As of November 15, 2024, MPS has confirmed that approximately 85% of service lines are non-lead, while 13% require further investigation. Only 2% of service lines have been definitively identified as lead. For more detailed information on mitigating lead exposure in drinking water, please visit the MPS website.
Customers with confirmed lead, galvanized, or unverified service lines will receive a notification letter from MPS in the near future outlining necessary actions. MPS remains committed to ensuring safe drinking water for all Moorhead residents.
