Kiewit Offshore Services Expands with New Texas Fabrication Yard

Kiewit Offshore Services Ltd. (KOS), a subsidiary of Peter Kiewit Sons Inc., is constructing a new fabrication yard in Ingleside, Texas, strategically positioned to capitalize on the projected growth in Gulf of Mexico drilling and global deepwater activity.

The 400-acre site, situated along the LaQuinta Channel, offers unrestricted deepwater access to the Gulf. KOS President Myron Rodrigue announced the development, highlighting the yard’s versatility in accommodating a wide spectrum of offshore structures. This includes conventional fixed platforms and more complex floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) units. While currently without contracts, KOS anticipates operational readiness by June.

The phased construction of the yard represents a $100 million capital investment. Initial staffing projections estimate a peak workforce of 350 in 2001, with anticipated long-term employment reaching 1,000. This significant undertaking underscores Kiewit’s commitment to the offshore sector.

Kiewit boasts over three decades of experience in constructing oil and gas facilities, ranging from the Arctic Circle to West Africa. Their presence in the Corpus Christi region dates back to 1984, with involvement in various ventures including Gulf Marine Fabricators Inc., Bullwinkle Constructors, and Aker Gulf Marine. Following Aker Maritime AS’s acquisition of Kiewit’s stake in Aker Gulf Marine, 46 employees chose to remain with Kiewit, forming the foundation of KOS.

The new KOS facility will feature 3,600 feet of bulkhead and over 250,000 square feet of covered workspace. This includes four interconnected bays, climate-controlled storage, and advanced automated shape and brace-cutting capabilities. These resources position KOS to efficiently deliver high-quality fabrication services to meet the evolving demands of the offshore industry.

The Ingleside yard signifies Kiewit Offshore Services’ commitment to providing comprehensive solutions for offshore energy development. The facility’s strategic location, coupled with Kiewit’s extensive experience and advanced capabilities, positions the company for continued success in the dynamic offshore market.
