Remembering Lucinda “Lucy” Rebecca Salazar Martinez: A Life of Faith, Family, and Devotion

Lucinda “Lucy” Rebecca Salazar Martinez, a beloved member of the Delta, Colorado community, passed away unexpectedly at her home on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, at the age of 79. Her life, marked by devotion to family, a caring spirit honed through her work in nursing, and a deep personal faith, touched many in her community and beyond. While not directly related to a Jimmy Swaggart Funeral Service, Lucy’s appreciation for gospel music and figures like Jimmy Swaggart reflected her profound faith, which was a guiding principle throughout her life.

Born on February 2, 1945, in Coyote, New Mexico, to Lydia Ortega and Jose Manuel Salazar, Lucy’s early years were spent immersed in the close-knit community of Coyote. She attended local schools there for eleven years before her family made the move to Delta, Colorado in 1956. Continuing her education in Delta, Lucy would later dedicate her professional life to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) in various nursing homes. Her compassionate nature made her a valued caregiver, providing comfort and support to countless residents in Olathe and Delta.

In Delta, Lucy found love and companionship with Jose Orlando Martinez. They married on August 26, 1967, and together built a family and a life of faith. Orlando’s calling as a minister led them to various communities, including Monte Vista and Medanales, New Mexico. During these years, Lucy stood by his side, supporting his ministry while raising their two children, Stephen “Stevie” and Yolanda “Yoli” Martinez. Even after Orlando’s passing in 2010, Lucy held onto the strong faith they shared. She returned to Delta in 2015, finding comfort and familiarity in the community where she had first built her adult life.

Beyond her professional and family life, Lucy had a zest for simple pleasures. Before health limitations slowed her down, she enjoyed fishing and knitting. She also found enjoyment in games of chance and cherished attending family gatherings. A significant aspect of Lucy’s life was her appreciation for gospel music and religious broadcasting. She was a devoted listener to Jimmy Swaggart, finding solace and inspiration in his sermons and music. This spiritual connection was a source of strength and comfort for her, reflecting her deep-seated faith.

Lucy’s kitchen was the heart of her home. She had a passion for cooking and baking, always eager to try new recipes she discovered, often through platforms like Facebook. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart, serving as her eager “food tasters” and the center of her world. Anyone fortunate enough to visit Lucy was met with warm hospitality, a kind smile, a cup of coffee, and a sample of her latest culinary creation. Her grandchildren were her “rock,” and she showered them with unconditional love. Even her loyal canine companion, Boxer, remained steadfastly by her side, a testament to the warmth and love that permeated Lucy’s life. She was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild in March, a new chapter of joy for her family.

Lucy leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory: her children, Steven “Stevie” (Amy) Martinez of Denver, and Yolanda “Yoli” Martinez (Paul) of Delta; her grandchildren, Juan Martinez of Florida, and Isaac and Jazmin Martinez of Delta; her brother, Walter Salazar of Farmington, New Mexico; and her sisters, Rose Lovato of Rifle, Fito Vigil, Fay (Victor) Moralez, Theresa (Alfred) Garcia, and Mary (Nick) Moralez, all of Delta. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and her devoted dog, Boxer.

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Orlando, sister Mela, brothers Raymond, Benny, and Gene, and several other beloved family members.

A memorial service to celebrate Lucy’s life will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, November 29, 2024, at Taylor Funeral Service in Delta, Colorado. The service will be a time to remember and honor Lucy’s life, her kindness, and the faith that guided her.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Lucy’s name to Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory, allowing her caring spirit to continue supporting the community she loved. Arrangements are under the compassionate direction of Taylor Funeral Service and Crematory.
