The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers several electronic payment options for taxpayers. One such option is the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). EFTPS requires enrollment and validation with the IRS before use. After enrollment, a Personal Identification Number (PIN) is mailed to the taxpayer’s registered IRS address within five to seven business days.
Taxpayers can schedule payments through the EFTPS website or via their voice response system (1-800-555-3453). To ensure timely payment, payments must be scheduled by 8 p.m. ET the day before the tax due date. The designated bank account will be debited on the chosen settlement date.
The EFTPS website is compatible with Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox for Windows users. Taxpayers can seamlessly switch between the website and the voice response system to manage and schedule their payments.
For those required to make electronic tax payments but prefer not to use EFTPS directly, alternative options exist. Taxpayers can utilize ACH Credit or same-day wire transfers through their financial institutions. Consulting a tax professional or payroll provider to manage payments is also possible. However, these alternatives may involve fees and potentially earlier payment deadlines.
The IRS emphasizes the importance of security and cautions taxpayers against email scams. Official IRS emails regarding EFTPS are only sent to those who have specifically opted in for email notifications during enrollment. Any unsolicited email claiming to be from the IRS or a related function should be reported to [email protected].
