The University of Kansas (KU) Police Department provides a comprehensive security Escort Service for students, employees, and visitors navigating the campus and surrounding areas. This escort service aims to enhance safety and provide peace of mind, particularly during late hours or when traversing less populated areas.
KU Escort Service: Operational Boundaries and Hours
The KU security escort service operates within specific geographical boundaries and designated hours. On-campus escorts are available to and from residences, parking lots, and parking garages within the area bordered by Chester to the north, State Line Road to the east, 43rd Street to the south, and Fisher to the west.
During regular shuttle operation hours (4:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Monday to Friday), individuals are encouraged to utilize the existing shuttle bus system for transportation within the main campus. Outside these hours, an on-demand service is accessible through the TapRide app, facilitating pick-up by either a shuttle bus or a dedicated escort vehicle.
Off-campus escorts are provided from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., Monday to Friday, and around the clock on weekends and holidays, within the same geographical boundaries as the on-campus service.

Requesting a KU Security Escort: Procedures and Designated Points
To request a security escort, individuals should contact the KU Police dispatch at 913-588-5030. It’s crucial to clearly state the need for a security escort, specifying the current location and intended destination to ensure prompt service. For efficient operation, the main entrance of KU Hospital and the Health Education Building (HEB) serve as primary pick-up and drop-off points. While requests outside the established boundaries and hours may be considered, they require approval from a supervising officer.
Prioritizing Safety When Crossing 39th Street: Utilizing Skywalks
For enhanced safety when crossing 39th Street, KU Police strongly recommend utilizing the available skywalks. These provide a secure and convenient alternative to ground-level crosswalks. Access to the hospital skywalk is situated adjacent to A.R. Dykes Library, while the HEB/Orr-Major Skywalk entrance is located on the ground floor of the HEB at the 39th Street entrance.
KU’s Commitment to Safety
The KU security escort service underscores the university’s dedication to ensuring the well-being of its community members. By providing this resource, KU strives to create a safer environment for everyone on and around campus.
