Esker Eugene Elder, a resident of Stony Point, North Carolina, peacefully passed away at his home on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at the age of 77. Holding the hand of his daughter, affectionately known as “Punkin,” and with his loyal dogs, Sam and Willie, by his side, Esker’s departure was a serene transition to reunite with his beloved wife, Mary, in their heavenly home. His life, characterized by strong will, independence, and a deep capacity for love, leaves behind a lasting imprint on his family and community.

Born in Iredell County on September 1, 1947, Esker was the son of the late Dewey Elder and Mable Sprinkle Elder. From an early age, Esker demonstrated a remarkable aptitude for various skills, embodying a philosophy of meticulousness and diligence in every endeavor. He was known for his unwavering spirit and self-reliance, traits that defined his approach to life and work. Beyond his strong exterior, Esker was a devoted and nurturing father to his daughter, “Punkin.” He served as her guiding light and greatest teacher, imparting invaluable life lessons and unconditional love. His affection extended to his son-in-law, Shawn, with whom he shared a special bond, enjoying collaborative projects and appreciating Shawn’s partnership with Punkin. Esker’s wisdom and love have equipped his daughter to navigate life with the assurance of her parents’ enduring presence. He often expressed joy at seeing his teachings passed down to his granddaughters, a testament to his lasting legacy.

Preceding Esker in death were his parents, his cherished wife, Mary Rector Elder, and his siblings Maude, Mary, Helen, Johnnie, Robert, Jake, and James. He is survived by his loving daughter, Kellie “Punkin” Elder Marlowe, and her husband Shawn; his adored granddaughters, Willa and Pyper Marlowe; his sisters, Peggy and Louise; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends who will all cherish his memory.

A funeral service to honor and celebrate Esker’s life will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at Marvin Methodist Church. Pastor Jerry Rogers and Pastor Jeff Carson will officiate the service, guiding attendees in remembrance and reflection. Following the service, Esker will be laid to rest in Union Cemetery, completing his earthly journey. Prior to the funeral service, the family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:45 PM at the church, providing an opportunity for condolences and shared memories.

Serving as pallbearers will be Shawn Marlowe, Corey Parker, Hank Childers, Jeff Carson, Robbie Beam, and Frankie Estes, each carrying the honor of escorting Esker to his final resting place. Honorary pallbearers include Wade Shoemaker, Chris Pope, and Bryan Cook, friends and family who held a special place in Esker’s life.
