Are you passionate about workers’ rights and social justice? The Australian Services Union (ASU) NSW & ACT (Services) Branch is seeking a dedicated and motivated individual to join our growing team. As a progressive and active union, we are committed to empowering our members and winning campaigns that create tangible improvements in workers’ lives and contribute to a fairer society. Our landmark achievements, such as the ASU Equal Pay campaign, which secured pay increases of 23 to 45% for community and disability workers across Australia, and the We Won’t Wait campaign for 10 days of paid domestic violence leave for all workers, demonstrate our commitment to making a real difference.
We are currently offering a full-time organiser position where you will have the opportunity to work alongside our committed members in the vital public transport and aviation industries. This role is based in our Redfern office, a location with excellent public transport links.
Are You the Right Candidate?
We encourage applications from individuals who meet the following selection criteria:
- Experience in a union or a similar organising role within a campaigning organisation is highly desirable. Your background should demonstrate an understanding of how collective action and organised campaigns can empower workers.
- You should possess the ability to identify workplace issues and disputes that present opportunities for organising and collective action. This includes understanding how to mobilize members and build power within workplaces to strengthen the union’s presence.
- A key aspect of this role is recruitment. You will need to demonstrate an understanding of integrating recruitment principles into all facets of your work, ensuring the union continues to grow and represent a larger portion of the workforce.
- Identifying and nurturing workplace activists and delegates is crucial. You will be expected to support these individuals in developing strong and democratic union representation in their workplaces, fostering a member-led union culture.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. This includes proficiency in using social media platforms to engage with members and the wider community, and to articulate the union’s message effectively.
- The ability to work autonomously and proactively is important, as is the capacity to collaborate effectively within a team environment. We value a collegiate approach and the sharing of knowledge and experience.
- A commitment to the union’s broader political and social justice agenda is expected. We are looking for individuals who are aligned with our values and are ready to participate in campaigns for a fairer society.
