Yakima Garbage Service: Your Comprehensive Guide to Refuse Collection

Yakima Garbage Service: Your Comprehensive Guide to Refuse Collection

Keeping our communities safe, clean, and healthy is a shared responsibility. The City of Yakima Refuse Division is dedicated to providing consistent and reliable Garbage Service for all residents. Even on days with inclement weather, we strive to maintain our regular collection schedule. For updates during winter weather conditions, please refer to our Winter Weather Advisory.

We appreciate the cooperation of our valued residents in helping us ensure the safety of our refuse workers and the efficiency of our garbage service. Please follow these simple guidelines to facilitate smooth and safe trash removal:

Simple Steps for Efficient Garbage Service:

  1. Bag All Trash: Ensure all household waste is securely contained within bags.
  2. Securely Tie Bags: Completely close and tie all trash bags to prevent spills and散乱.
  3. Early Cart Placement: Place your garbage carts at the curb or alley line by 6:00 AM on your collection day.
  4. Cart Usage: All garbage must be placed inside your designated cart. Items left at the curb outside of the cart will not be collected unless prior arrangements have been made with the Refuse Department.

Understanding Automated Garbage Collection Services and Rates

The City of Yakima utilizes an automated garbage collection system for efficient and streamlined service. Effective January 20th, 2025, the new rates for automated garbage service are as follows:

32-Gallon $22.95
96-Gallon $26.45

Proper Cart Placement for Garbage Collection

To ensure your scheduled garbage service is uninterrupted, please adhere to the following cart placement guidelines:

  • Timely Placement: Containers should be at the curb or alley line by 6:00 a.m. on your designated pickup day.
  • Bagged Garbage: All garbage must be bagged before placing it in the cart.
  • Clearance Space: Position your cart at least 4 feet away from any obstructions. This includes other garbage or yard waste carts, parked vehicles, fences, mailboxes, and utility poles.
  • Correct Cart Orientation: Place your cart with the wheels facing your residence and the lid opening towards the street or road.
  • Overhead Clearance: Avoid placing carts under low-hanging tree branches, wires, building eaves, or any other overhead objects that could interfere with collection.
  • Vehicle Parking: Please do not park vehicles in front of your garbage cart on collection day.

Extra Garbage Collection and Fees

For occasional needs beyond your regular cart capacity, the City of Yakima offers extra garbage collection services. Extra items placed outside of your cart can be collected upon request for an additional fee. Please note the following extra item collection fees:

Extra Items Collection Fee (per item)
Bag $3.60
Box $3.60
Can/Cart $3.60

Understanding Overfill Fees for Garbage Carts

To maintain efficient and safe garbage service, overfill fees are applied when carts are filled beyond capacity. Overfill charges are assessed to the container assigned to your residence.

  • Cart Overfill: For both 32 and 96-gallon carts, overfill charges are $3.60 per cart, per occurrence when debris is above the rim.
  • Metal Bin Overfill: For metal bins, overfill charges are $19.80 per bin, per occurrence if debris exceeds the rim.

Call-Back Service Requests and Associated Fees

If your garbage or yard waste was not placed out for collection at the scheduled time or day, a call-back service can be requested. Please be aware that a $16.00 fee applies for each call-back request.

Yard Waste Garbage Collection Services

In addition to regular garbage service, the City of Yakima Refuse Division provides dedicated yard waste collection. For detailed information on this service, please visit our Yard Waste Service page.

Metal Bins for Larger Garbage Service Needs

For residences with multiple dwellings or those that consistently generate significant amounts of garbage, metal bins are available.
