Amtrak Service Boston: A Review of South Station Lounge and Unexpected Delays

The Amtrak lounge at Boston’s South Station offers a spacious area with a raised central seating section, retaining much of the station’s original grandeur, particularly its ornate ceiling. Free Wi-Fi with decent speed is available, and a refreshment area on the lower level provides bottled drinks, a coffee machine, and snacks like peanuts, muffins, fruit, and caramel waffles. While the lounge itself is pleasant, the temperature can fluctuate drastically, becoming uncomfortably cold at times. The modern and clean restrooms are a plus.

Unfortunately, our experience was marred by a significant train delay, extending our stay in the lounge for an unexpected two hours. Communication regarding the train’s boarding was lacking, with no announcements made and the Amtrak app displaying inaccurate departure information. Some passengers received preferential notification, seemingly through a “Red Cap” service we were unaware of at the time. Accessing the lounge with luggage proved challenging due to a malfunctioning elevator, despite being advised to use it after struggling up the stairs.
