1. Services for a General Audience
Our Services are designed for a general audience and are not directly targeted at children without parental or guardian involvement. Philo does not knowingly collect personal data from individuals under 18 years of age without verifiable parental consent.
We urge parents and guardians to engage in discussions with their children about online safety and responsible disclosure of information on the internet. If we discover that we have inadvertently collected personal data from a child under 18 without proper consent, we will take immediate steps to remove that information. If you become aware of any instance where we might have collected data from a minor without parental consent, please contact our philo customer service team immediately via email at [email protected], through our contact page at philo.com/contact, or by phone at 855-CSPHILO (855-277-4456).
2. Types of Data Collected and Their Use
In providing our Services and ensuring effective philo customer service, we collect various types of data about you. This collection occurs directly through your interactions with our Services, automatically as you navigate our platforms, and occasionally from third-party sources. Some of this data is classified as “personal information” or “personal data,” and some may be considered “sensitive” under applicable laws. Personal data is defined as information that identifies you as an individual, such as your name and email address. We also treat information like IP addresses and cookie identifiers as personal data where mandated by law.
We may also process your personal data by de-identifying or pseudonymizing it, making it non-personal. This might involve aggregation or conversion to a code, often using hashing. We maintain and use this de-identified data without attempting re-identification, except where legally permitted, such as to verify our de-identification processes. De-identified and pseudonymized data are treated as non-personal to the fullest extent permitted by law. Should we combine non-personal data with personal data, the combined information is treated as personal data under this Privacy Policy. We reserve the right to share non-personal data with third parties for any purpose, including advertising, research, and marketing, as legally allowed.

4. Detailed Data Practices
This section provides further details on the data practices summarized in the Chart linked in Section 3, offering clarity and in-depth explanations to enhance your understanding of these practices, which are integral to our philo customer service operations.
a. Automated Data Collection
Device ID/Information. When you interact with our Services, we, along with our service providers, business partners, and other third parties, may automatically collect and store certain data (“Device ID/Information”). This data may be accessed from your devices like computers, tablets, mobile phones, or digital media players. Device ID/Information may include:
- Your IP address, mobile device identifier, and other unique identifiers.
- Device specifics like model, operating system version, date and time settings, and mobile network information.
- MAC address, browser type and version, operating system type and version, platform type, carrier identity, radio type (e.g., 4G), domain names, device identifiers, push notification tokens, and advertising identifiers for the Philo Subscription Service.
- Approximate location of your device, potentially inferred from data like your IP address.
- Usage patterns and interactions with the Services, including search terms, pages visited, content viewed, preferences, ad interactions, application installations, and referring/exit pages and URLs.
Approximate Location Data. Your approximate location may be collected or inferred from data such as your IP address. Additionally, some mobile providers may share device location data with us or our third-party service providers.
This Device ID/Information is collected using technologies like:
Cookies, Local Storage, and Local Shared Objects. Cookies are small data pieces downloaded to your device when you visit a website and stored by your browser. They are sent back to the originating service on subsequent visits, helping the website recognize your device. Cookies enhance your experience by facilitating access to different parts of our Services, showing us popular pages, and remembering your session ID and preferences as a subscriber. We may use cookies to personalize ads and track user behavior. Session cookies are temporary and may be deleted upon browser exit, while persistent cookies help us recognize you on return visits. Most browsers allow you to manage cookie settings. More information about cookies is available at www.allaboutcookies.org.
Local shared objects (LSOs) and local storage, like HTML5 Local Storage, may be used to improve user experience by storing more complex data than cookies. Third-party partners may also use HTML5 for data collection and storage related to service features and advertising.
Web Beacons and Pixel Tags. Web beacons and pixel tags (also known as web bugs and clear GIFs) are used to track if a page or ad has been viewed or an email opened. These tools, such as transparent images on our Services or in emails, help us optimize and tailor our Services and advertising, track conversions, and understand email engagement. Web beacons can provide third parties with information like IP address, page URL, viewing time, browser type, and cookie data.
Embedded Scripts. Embedded scripts are programming code designed to collect information about your interactions with the Services, such as clicked links. This code is temporarily used by our server or third-party providers during your session and deactivated upon disconnection.
Software Development Kits (SDKs). SDKs are software packages with tools to build applications and implement features, including data collection features.
Mobile Device Data Collection. We use embedded scripts and SDK tools to collect data from mobile devices, including hardware model, operating system details, device identifiers (like IDFA on Apple and Advertising ID on Android), mobile network information, and website usage behavior. Additional technologies may be used for security, fraud detection, and maintenance.
Session Recording Language. Philo uses session replay technology to record your interactions with the Services, such as pages visited, time spent, and links clicked. This information is used for internal purposes, such as website analytics, service and product improvement, and functionality issue resolution.
We also employ various technologies to collect similar device and interaction data for security, fraud prevention, and maintenance, all contributing to a more reliable philo customer service experience.
b. Third-Party Data
Enhancement Data. We may receive data about you from third parties, such as data aggregators and business partners. This data may be combined with the information we collect to enhance our understanding of your preferences, tailor content, provide relevant advertising, and offer products or services of interest. Data collected by third parties is governed by their privacy practices.
c. Data Provided Directly by You
We collect data that you directly provide when using our Services, including:
Viewed Content and VPPA Compliance. To provide features like “continue watching” across devices, we track the content you watch, including titles, episode names, viewing times, and stopping points. This viewing history is linked to your account and all devices you use. We also record content to enable features like pause, rewind, and fast-forward. General viewing categories may be used to provide relevant advertising. Information about viewed ads may also be collected.
By sharing your viewing history on third-party platforms or engaging with content (liking, sharing), you acknowledge that the Video Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (VPPA) may not apply. However, to the extent it does, you provide informed consent for the disclosure of this information.
Live Chat. Interactions within our live chat feature, designed for philo customer service, may be recorded and retained to assist you, provide account support, improve our services, and for marketing purposes. By using chat assistance, you consent to this recording. Screen or video sharing during chat sessions may allow us to view data, applications, or content on your device screen or camera.
Sweepstakes, Contests, & Promotions. Participation in Promotions may require registration and agreement to specific rules, which may include allowing sponsors to use your personal information for advertising or marketing. Personal data may be disclosed to third parties or the public in connection with Promotion administration, including winner selection and prize fulfillment, as permitted by law and the Promotion’s terms.
d. Disclosure of Data to Third Parties
Philo may share non-personal data, including Device ID/Interaction Information and hashed or de-identified data, with third parties at our discretion for purposes like targeted advertising. We may also share your data as legally permitted, as disclosed at collection, as described in this Privacy Policy, with your consent, and in the following circumstances:
Service Companies. We engage Service Companies to perform services on our behalf, including business operations, service provision, marketing, analytics, data processing, security, fraud prevention, legal services, auditing, account management, customer and technical support, advertising, and payment processing. These companies may use your data for purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy. For example, they may assist with email communications, customer service, payment processing, advertising programs, data storage, and product development. Depending on their services, we may share information with these companies or allow them to collect data directly. Service Companies use personal data in accordance with our agreements, which may include using data to provide services, improve their services, combat fraud, and enhance ad targeting. We may also share data related to fraudulent activities with fraud prevention service providers to protect us and their other clients.
Affiliated Media Content Providers. If you use our Services to access applications from affiliated media content providers (e.g., “TV Everywhere” apps), we may share your information to verify your eligibility to use these applications and provide other relevant information as per this Privacy Policy. Your use of these applications is optional and subject to their separate terms of use and privacy policies.
Nielsen Measurement. Some of our Services include Nielsen measurement software for market research, like Nielsen’s TV ratings. Nielsen uses your service usage and content viewing information to calculate measurement statistics. You can find more information and choices regarding Nielsen measurement:
- On iOS and Android devices: In the Philo app settings, look for “About Nielsen Measurement.”
- On the Philo website: Visit About Nielsen TV Rating Measurement or find the link in your Account settings under “Nielsen TV Rating Measurement.”
Schools for Philo Edu Service Support. For Philo Edu Service users contacting us about authorization issues, we may share your on-campus address and student ID email with your school to verify your housing status and restore account access, ensuring effective philo customer service in educational settings.
Social Media and Third-Party Platforms. Connecting to our Services through social media or third-party platforms allows us to transmit your user information to these providers, enhancing service integration and philo customer service accessibility across platforms.
Business Transactions and Transfers. In the event of a business transaction such as a sale, merger, or reorganization, personal and non-personal data may be disclosed or transferred as part of the transaction and due diligence. Material changes in data processing due to such transactions will be posted on our website or Services, and email notifications may be sent to account holders. By using our Services, you consent to such data transfers.
Digital Fingerprinting and Cross-Device Linking. We and third parties may use digital fingerprinting and cross-device linking technologies to collect device information and create a digital identifier. This data is combined with service usage information and may be linked to your account details. The collected data helps create a device history, reduce fraud, recognize your devices, and personalize advertising and analytics on our Services and other platforms. For opt-out choices regarding third-party advertising and analytics, please see Section 5.
5. Third-Party Advertising and Analytics/Privacy Controls
We collaborate with Ad Partners to deliver ads on our Services and across the internet, provide advertising-related services, and assist in marketing our Services. These Ad Partners may use their own tracking technologies (like cookies and web beacons) and collect Device ID/Interaction Information and other data, some of which may be personal data. You may submit data through interactive ads on our Services or third-party platforms, which we may share with Ad Partners. These partners may identify your non-precise location and use advertising identifiers to deliver personalized advertising. Ad Partners may also use cookies and similar technologies to collect data about your activities on our Services and other websites, including your viewed content, ads interacted with, online behavior, email address, and phone number.
Ad Partners use this information for various purposes, including: advertising on Philo Services and elsewhere, measuring ad performance, improving ad effectiveness, tracking conversions, audience segmentation, frequency capping, campaign insights, device linking, reporting, fraud detection, security, research and development, delivering targeted ads, and legal compliance. They may also use your non-precise location to provide geographically relevant ads and offers.
We may provide log files to Ad Partners, covering user activity on our Services, including ad interactions, device information, and cookie data. We also provide reports, including aggregated or de-identified data, on campaign effectiveness.
Tools.
You have several tools available to manage your privacy and opt-out of third-party advertising and analytics:
Do Not Track. While “Do Not Track” signals are still being developed, we adhere to the standards in this Privacy Policy and will monitor and comply with Do Not Track requests as they align with applicable laws. For more information, visit www.allaboutdnt.org.
Opting out through these mechanisms does not prevent all advertising, but it limits personalized ads. Opt-out choices are browser and device-specific, requiring you to opt out separately on each browser and device.
