Remembering Retha Ann Somers Durham: Gentry Family Funeral Service Obituary

Mrs. Retha Ann Somers Durham, a beloved member of the Hamptonville community, passed away on Sunday, October 27, 2024, at the age of 87. Born on July 31, 1937, in Wilkes County, she was the daughter of the late John Somers and Ollie Williams Somers. Retha was predeceased by her husband, Noah Durham; her son, Bradley Durham; brothers Dean and Rev. Dwight Somers; sisters Alene Somers Johnson and Sybil Somers Thomason; and great-grandchild Breonna Bushey. Her life was marked by dedication to her family, her faith, and her work.

Retha dedicated 30 years of her career to Advance Auto, retiring before embracing the role of a homemaker. Her faith was central to her life, and she was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church. She cherished her church family and eagerly participated in church trips, especially enjoying those with her granddaughter Carrie. Retha’s commitment to serving the Lord was evident in all aspects of her life. Beyond her church activities, Retha found joy in simple pleasures such as sewing, cooking, and observing the birds in her garden. However, her greatest joy was the time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is lovingly remembered by her son, Marty Durham; granddaughters Kasey Gentry, Kristin (Justin) Bushey, and Carrie (Garrett) Durham Robinette; and great-grandchildren Ian Gentry, Bentley, Bella, Bronx, Balyze, Boaz, and Brightlyn Bushey, Hayden Durham. She also leaves behind special nieces and nephews who held a dear place in her heart.

The funeral service to celebrate Retha’s life will be held at Union Baptist Church in Hamptonville on Saturday, November 2, 2024. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, with the funeral service commencing at 2:00 PM. Rev. Kenny Pardue and Rev. Justin Bushey will officiate, and burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The Durham family extends heartfelt gratitude to the Iredell Hospice Staff, especially social worker Joann, nurse Katrina, and CNA Cassie, for their compassionate care.
